Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased tracks Carly Handbags, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole cheap monster beats headphones, is “Can We Really Party Today” by Jonathan Wilson from the 2011 album Gentle Spirit on Bella Union.
Jonathan Wilson’s first officially released album Gentle Spirit may come as a welcome surprise to fans of his decidedly underground 2007 debut Frankie Ray. From a man whose company includes J. Tillman, Will Oldham (Bonnie “Prince” Billy), Andy Cabic (Vetiver), and a cadre of others Pro Beats by Dre Review, one might expect a none-too-small shadow of influence. But on Spirit, Wilson proves yet again that his nimble fingers stand with the best when it comes to psychedelic folk-rock. He’s made a splash in the UK, nabbing top spots in both Mojo and Uncut year-end lists, and he’s shared the stage with Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jackson Brown, and Bonnie Raitt. If all that name-dropping’s not enough for you yet, just take a listen to today’s Song of the Day. “Can We Really Party Today?” showcases the 37-year-old North Carolina native at his finest, with deft fingerpicking and all the down-home, country-style whispered lyrics and twang.
Wilson’s unfortunately not on the road right now, but you can still hook up with him on his website and Facebook page, and check out the video for “Desert Raven” below:
